Introduction to Metal Recycling 101
Hello, my name is Jonny Snider, the owner and operator of JonnySWeld, LLC. I have been welding and working with metal since 2016 but I have been around recycling my whole life. It all started with my mother Barbara who was an avid recycler in Orange County, California. We often visited the recycling centers where my mother would recycle such items like newspaper, glass bottles, aluminum cans, plastic containers and even cardboard. At a young age I learned the basic fundamentals of recycling and not just the act of exchanging them for money, but what went on behind the scenes like sorting, separating, storing and transportation. My mother would separate each items to gain the most refund for example, separating different colored glass into each color because it was worth more separated vs mixed. Same with cardboard vs paper and understanding the difference in each category maximized your efforts. So learning all that helped bring me to where I am today here in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.
Recycling here in my area is a lot different then in CA and the biggest difference I’ve noticed is we don’t pay CRV (Cash Redemption Value or Deposit) like they do in CA.. So here we don’t not get a bottle return on recycling bottles, cans or cardboard but we do have places called scrap yards that accept most types of metals. Unfortunately I have not found a place to buy plastic bottle, glass or cardboard but they can still be recycled through the city waste management.
Excitedly, this brings be up to speed with why I am starting this blog. Recycling my favorite material, metal. Since I started welding in 2016 I have really push my metal recycling passion to a whole new level. I have been learning the ins and out about different materials, categories and storing solutions just to name a few. Personally I really enjoy working with a scrap yard called General Alloys located in Washington, PA. But any scrapyard will do. Metal comes in all shapes and forms and this blog will help everyone better understand what metals can be recycled, what categories they are in and some tricks and tips to story your scrap metal before taking it to the scrap yard. Follow along on this adventure and hope to better our world one piece of metal at time.
